| Bardi: art and history |
|
|
The
fortress of Bardi, built in the IX century in a strategic
position on the junction between the Ceno and the Noveglia,
initially served its purpose as a defensive post against the
advance of the Hungarians. The current structure of the fortress
is due to extensions carried out at the end of the fifteenth-century,
commissioned by Manfredo Il Landi. At the end of the sixteenth
century, Federico Landi transformed the medieval fortress
into a sumptuous stately residence.
Following the death of Prince Federico, the building was surrendered
to the Farnese family (1682) and became the military garrison
and barracks. It remained as such until 1868, when it was designated
headquarters of the municipality.
Currently the Fortress is the seat of the Museum of Farming
Civilisation of the Poaching Museum, and is included in the
tourist circuit of "Castles of the Duchy".At the foot
of the fortress, we find the Church of San Francesco, chosen
by Federico Landi as the family funereal chapel. The church
has recently been restored and is the seat of the Ceno Valley
Studies Centre as exhibition space and convention centre.
