| Sala Baganza: art and history |

|
Sala
Baganza came into existence during the Longobard period.
Feud of the Sanvitale family since 1258, it saw the construction
of the actual fortress during the XV century. It had a rectangular
design, and was located on the foundations of the ancient fort.In
the course of the sixteenth century, Sala beacame home to a
circle of scholars and artists, animated by the presence of,
amongst others, Nicolò Sanvitale and his wife Beatrice
da Correggio and successively by Giberto IV along with his wife
Barbara Sanseverino. The feud passed into the hands of the Farnese
family in 1612, and became the summer residence of the court.
The large hunting reserve was set up by the Farnese family,
which today is the Parco Regionale dei Boschi di Carrega (Regional
Park of the Forest of Carrega). Within the fortress, of particular
note are the fifteenth century open gallery and two large pictorial
cycles executed in the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries. The
rooms frescoed by Bernardino Campi, Orazio Samacchini, Ercole
Procaccini and Cesare Baglione belong to the first; the second
to Sebastiano Galeotti.
