Pier
Maria III Rossi (1504-1547).
Pier Maria III Rossi, first-born son of Troilo I and Bianca
Riario, received his education at the Florentine court of the
Medici, together with his mother's brother (the famous Giovanni
of the Bande Nere), and was subsequently sent as page to Francesco
I of France.
He assumed rule on the death of his father in 1521, preserving
an equidistant position between France and the Empire, alternately
supporting one or the other. All of Pier Maria's life was dedicated
to war, from the first training to his early participation in
Francesco I's army, and to a decade of support under the imperial
banners of Carlo V; it was as "a man of war" that,
historians tell us, "he continually served the militia
obtaining different and supreme rank and honour" .
