The
recent critical rediscovery of the works of Nicolò dell'Abate,
and the finding of numerous frescoes by the master from the
original cycle dedicated to the "stories of Hercules"
within the Fortress at Soragna, render the reconstruction of
the entire cycle by Abate possible, and allow us to gather new
insight into the works of the Modenese master. Nicolò
dell'Abate, one of Parmigianino's contemporaries and another
of the founders of Mannerism, was to have a determining influence
on the diffusion of Emilian Mannerism throughout Europe, and
above all in France.The fictitious reconstruction of the Hercules
Room allows us to completely reread the fresco, and provides
us with a taster of the centenary celebrations planned for 2004.
