| Varano de' Melegari: art and history |
|
|
The
historic events in the village of Varano are closely linked
to those of the castle, which was built during the XV century
and protected the valley. In 1452, following the re-conquering
of the feud by Rolando il Magnifico, the building returned to
being firmly in the possession of the Pallavicino family and
assumed its current form. This form set it apart from other
fifteenth century Parma castles in many respects, inlcuding
the four non-corner towers, the south-west façade with
the three aligned towers, and the access portal which opens
on one side of the tower, a solution which is unusual but tactically
very effective. In 1805, the Levacher family took the place
of the Pallavicino family in the ownership of the castle, and
maintained it until 1965. Today, the castle belongs to the council. The
current fortified structure, with a rectangular layout and angular
towers, still preserves the fifteenth century appearance with
protruding corbels and a scarp base. The internal structures
within the building, however, reveal repeated restructuring
and adjustment works carried out from the beginning of the XVIII
century, starting with the creation of the stairway by Alessandro
Pallavicino in 1715, up to the XX century, with the partial
transformation carried out immediately after the war by the
Levacher family.
