San Giovanni
Evangelista (St. John the Evangelist), is a church that was founded
in the 10th century and was restructured between 1498 and 1510 by Bernardino
Zaccagni for the Benedictine order. It contains an important series
of frescoes by Correggio, and other treasures. In the left nave, in
the area under arches IV I - II and in the chapel, there are frescoes
by the young Parmigianino dated 1522. In these figures it is possible
to discover the origins of his style and to discern the influences on
Parmigianino’s painting of Anselmi, Allegri, the Cremona school
but above all Correggio who, in the same period, also frescoed the cupola
with his “Transit of St. John the Evangelist”.
